Progressive Levels
  • Beginner 1
The objective of the class program is to offer coordination, gymnastics, strength and flexibility skills on all four of the Olympic events. They also learn trampoline and dance skills. The gymnasts learn discipline while being encouraged in a positive manner to accomplish the gymnastics skills on all the events. Evaluations are held at the completion of each eight week session. Classes are held daily.
  • Beginner 2
For those gymnasts who have mastered the fundamentals of level 1 or have been tested for this level.
  • Intermediate
For those gymnast that have passed all requirements of level 2 but not yet ready for a competitive program. At this level, a gymnast can learn advanced skills and never need to move to a competitive program.
  • Advanced
For those gymnasts who have passed the intermediate class and are ready to learn backhandsprings, glide kips and cartwheels on beam in order to move to the competitive team.
  • Beginning Boys, Intermediate Boys and Advanced Boys
The objective of the Boys class program is to provide an introduction to the sport of gymnastics while developing basic body control, strength, flexibility, and high self esteem. By conducting the classes in a positive manner, the boys have fun while learning gymnastics. The boys learn as they practice the basic skills on all of the boys apparatus and tumble trampoline. Evaluations take place at the completion of the eight week session. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
GYM-MINIS (Preschool)
The Gym-Mini program has been developed to promote basic motor skills as they apply to all physical activity. In this program, we do not strive to train for the Olympics, but instead we emphasize physical and social development using our specialized motor development equipment as well as our adapted gymnastics equipment with our positive, high energy staff! The Gym-Mini program is divided into three types of classes:
  • Mini's Gymnastics (3 to 5 years)
Children in this level will work in a structured fun atmosphere. This class will work on developing jumping, climbing, basic strength and flexibility, rhythmic skills as well as social skills through interaction with the other children. The target teaching ratio for this class is 6:1.
  • Advanced Minis (ages 3 to 5)
For children who are able to perform cartwheels, handstands, bridges, pullover on bars and cast off of bars. Class entrance is by interview only.
Competitive Teams
  • Girls Competive Team (Level 2– 10)
Our competitive team trains 3 - 6 days per week (level dependent). We strive to maintain a positive environment that builds healthy bodies, strong minds and willing spirits. All team members must become members of the Newport County YMCA and participation is by try-out only.
Booster Club
The Gymnastics Team has a booster club, which is run by parents of the team's members. We request that parents take an active part in the booster club. For more information, please contact: Newport YMCA Gymnastics Dept.
